COGENERATION

Cogeneration is a technology that generates electrical energy and captures heat that would otherwise be exhausted to provide useful thermal energy. Thermal energy can then be used to create hot water and/or steam which can be used for space heating, cooling, industrial processes, and domestic hot water.

A Martin Energy gas powered; internal combustion generator can harvest the heat from the generator to create energy efficiencies close to 90% whereas traditional heating sources can be less than 50% efficient.

The net cost of generating power from a gas cogeneration unit is lower than the purchase of electrical power from the grid. Excess power can be sold back to the grid to create another revenue stream.

Net costs of producing combined heat and power are less than the purchase of electrical and natural gas separately. This could lead to the realization of carbon credits.

Alberta Electric Microgen CHP Power Options by Martin Energy Group (MEG).

As clean green electrical power has become popular, and mandated, in the Province of Alberta larger power users find themselves facing the increased cost of green electrical power. This increase in power cost makes it cost effective to generate electricity on site, especially for larger users who incur high demand charges for peak power draw. It is most advantageous for reliable electric power, and for best economy, to operate these on site units in parallel with the utility grid, whenever possible. This narrative explains the intended operation of the Martin Energy Group interconnected Microgen CHP units.
